Themes
From the prologue, what themes do you expect to see in this novel? |
Well, its basically given that we will be dealing with race issues throughout the book, but the rest of the prologue didn’t really give us an idea of the themes of the book. |
I expect to see themes on how she learned to deal with the racism of her fellow classmates over time, and how she learned that it was as much her right to go there as any of the other students rights to go there. Both of these themes will also end up being related to how she used her freedom to go there, and its eventual consequences. |
From the prologue, I believe that a common theme throughout the novel will be equality- especially in regards to the treatment of African American students. I also expect to read about the author’s struggle for equal treatment at the school, which might be a common theme as well. Another theme in the novel might be education, and the ways in which students are educated. |
I think the prologue definately has shown us that racism will be very strong in this story. I see near the end a chance of hope or success from the story, because as she’s talking about her past, we already know that she is on the board and she does not hate the school as much as she once did. There will probably be different characters who go through different experiences, but all having something to do with the color of their skin. |

I exoect to see the theme we have been discussing alot lately which is freedom. not freedom in the sense that Lorene Cary is trapped or in slavery, but the freedom to be herself at her school, to not focus on what others think about her or what she looks like. I also expect to see the theme of rascism and possibly sexism, this was during the time when integration was a big deal. The fact that she was not only African American but also a girl probably didn’t make it any easier for her. |
It seems like not only a story based on race issues in a predominantly white school, but kind of a coming of age story as well. I think these two factors will combine to create a unique environment for the author in the school. Also, when she is talking about the feelings her students remind her of, I think those feelings will arise in her story. It is also possible that she will deal with her own guilt in going to the school, by being the only black student. |
I expect to see some adversity in her school experience in the novel. She makes it clear that it was obviously not a very easy experience to go through, but also a meaningful one. This could be a theme of overpowering adversity. Another theme will probobly be along the same lines, but doing so on her own. So this theme could be a singular person standing out above the others. |
The themes that I expect to see is: pride and determination. Well, they’re both kind of the same thing, but they’re different too. I expect to see determination, because I doubt that Lorene Cary would give in to the pressure that she has by going to a formerly all white school. There is bound to be prejudice and racist comments, but I think that she would have the determination to continue with her studies. The theme of pride goes along with it. She would probably be too proud to back down and she would be too proud to show that something is bothering if there is. She would probably try and deal with it herself. |
I believe that some of the main key themes of the book are going to be racial diversity, and how the author had to adapt to being one of the only African Americans at the school. It might also be some other high school issues, like peer pressure, and fitting in. |
After reading the prologue, I hope to learn more about her experiences throughout the novel. I would like to learn about the troubles she faced and how she was able to overcome them. One theme that I expect to see displayed in Black Ice is bravery. I think that it would take a lot of bravery to be in a school like this during the time period. I also think that equality will also be a strong theme. |
From reading the prologue, I feel there will be multiple themes. One will be the feeling of lonliness. From the reading, I feel there will be a an emphasis on the narrator’s feelings and the sense of lonliness. She won’t have many people to become friends with and she’ll be alone and suffering inside. But I also think this book will emphasize the feeling of overcoming obastacles. We could do anything we put our mind to. |

By reading the prologue, I think that one of the major themes in Black Ice will be defeating the odds and proving to everyone that you can be capable of doing what you set your mind to do. I think that another theme will be self determination- pushing youself and never giving up. From the prologue, I can conclude that Lorene set her mind to graduating from St. Paul’s, and did it- even though it was difficult and leaving the school was probably the easier thing to do. |
